A couple of weekends ago we got hit by a horrendous storm with tons of rain and high winds. Our street turned into a river and our city was as the mayor put it, “Underwater’. Rumor had it that people were building an Ark. Roads were washed out, fields became lakes and basements were flooded including many of our neighbor’s. A house around the corner had its empty in-ground swimming pool collapse under the pressure of the water logged ground. Fortunately our home and property were safe. Not so fortunate was the home of my good friend. A large oak tree in their yard split in half and landed on their house caving in the roof the ceilings and walls. Branches speared through ceilings coming dangerously close to the family inside. The torrential rain poured through the non-existent ceilings drenching everything inside… mattresses and furniture became large sponges. The next couple of days brought temps reaching almost 100 and mold started to build. The house is totaled… whatever could be salvaged was packed away into storage and precious possessions ruined tossed into dumpsters. Now the house will come down and get rebuilt and in the meantime, the family is spread around.. some staying at a hotel and some with relatives.

What would you grab if you only had 5 minutes to leave your house? Do you know where all your important papers are? Are they all in one place? What would you take?… photos, medications, computer, insurance papers, other documents, family treasures? Granted your family and pets are first… but after that… what? It made me stop and think and start to take inventory.

Gone up north to a crop… and to the non-scrapbookers, a crop is an event where a bunch of people get together to scrapbook. A friend and I went together and had a blast! I got 20 pages completed.. I think a record for me, but boy I was tired from being up late, for sitting so much and racking my brain for ideas. It was all worth it and I’m going again next weekend, this time with 8 of my friends. I think the organizer is giving us our own room because we can get a bit loud when we’re all together having fun and imbibing in adult beverages.

Color: The bedroom is progressing… or rather regressing. It took me over a week to decide on the right blue and when it got narrowed down to 3, I let DH decide. I didn’t care anymore. I wasn’t happy with the colors. I didn’t go with my first instinct, which was a cafe au lait….. like coffee with milk. I thought that all the blue toned accents would be highlighted against a beige wall, but with 3 blue walls painted… it was just too blue. The only thing that would stand out were the walls. So back to the paint store goes Chuck (the painter) to get more samples. And again more color splashes on the wall. Now I’m satisfied I’ve got the right color and even DH agrees (enter hallelujah chorus). Chuck will be back on Monday to repaint the room. YEAH!!!!

Chairs: We went furniture shopping this week for a new chair for the bedroom. I wanted brown leather. I have wanted leather chairs for years, but for some reason never get it and this time was the same. I wanted either a chair with an ottoman or a recliner that didn’t look like a recliner. NO overstuffed man chair in my room please. I want to be able to put my feet up and read, or knit or watch TV all comfy. I sat in every chair in the furniture showroom… and felt like Goldilocks…. chairs were too big, too little, arms not high enough, didn’t have an ottoman, back wasn’t straight. .. but I found the perfect chair and to top it off, it came in a blue suede. Now I have to be patient for 6-8 weeks for delivery.

Choirs: Bob and the Holland Chorale is singing up at Central Michigan University tomorrow. A special performance before a gaggle of music teachers and choir directors.

This one is for Sara, my son’s girlfriend and is supposed to be a Christmas present, but I’m giving it to her in November when we go to DC for Thanksgiving. It’s a cowl to put over your head like a collar and tuck into a coat like a scarf. Love the pattern, my first lace pattern and I think I’ll make one for myself after the gift knitting is done.

Yup, glaciers and I’m going to see them, right outside my suite as we cruise the inner passage because we are going to Alaska. It is never been on my favorite ‘to see’ places, I don’t even think it made the top 100 list. When I found out a year ago that my favorite artsy designer, Tim Holtz, was giving workshops on this Alaskan cruise, I thought, ” I’d travel in the ice just to spend a week with Tim”. DH must have heard that thought bubble because he said we should go and it would be my birthday present….. conveniently my birthday falls right during this cruise. So I called and have had this trip booked for at least 9 months. But, I haven’t been getting excited about it, I’ve even wanted to cancel several times… just can’t get excited over ice and boats .. remember the Titanic? A vacation isn’t such unless there’s palm trees and white sandy beaches and warm ocean breezes… but we got ice and glaciers, and bears and eagles and cold and rain. Now doesn’t that all sound pleasant? Everyone… and I mean everyone we’ve talked to about an Alaskan cruise has said how they always wanted to go to, or how it was their favorite cruise.. I’m still waiting to have it proven to me. The only good thing about it is the 9 hours of workshops I’ll be attending with :excitement: “Tim Holtz”. He is such a creative person and I really do like and use the Ranger products and others that he designs. I must say that in the last couple of days I have been feeling a little more tingly about the trip as I’ve found a yahoo group of other creative souls who, like me, will be taking the trip and they are making me feel more excited. This group is providing lots of much needed energy. I’ve made some ATC’s (artist trading cards) to swap and I may even make some charms for swapping as well. My ATC is a funny photo of our illustrious leader, Tim.

Not going to another city or state or even another house… I’m moving my scrap room/art studio. After years and years of trying to convince my DH that I need the room where the pool table is located, I finally convinced him. The new room is bigger, has more usable space and much better lighting. The sad thing is, even with all my rational reasonings, it took my girlfriend to bring it up and make my case with all the same reasons before he took a tape measure to the rooms. Men can be so exasperating. In any case, I’m moving! It will take weeks to get all the furniture moved and supplies sorted, purged and reorganized. It will take professionals to disassemble and move the pool table and only then can I fully get everything into place. Day by day I’m working in sections and trying to keep floor space open so the table can be moved.. hopefully next week. I made a vow that I would not make any scrappy purchases until I’ve used A LOT of what I already have… and I do have A LOT. It looks like a store down there. Of course this vow doesn’t include the things I purchased online before I got the go ahead to move my room, those things are being delivered now.
