Last Friday Bob and I went up to the dog show in Grand Rapids to meet up with our groomer and a breeder from Ohio. Bob has been talking with Linda, the groomer, about puppies and she highly recommended Dassin Farms from Medina Ohio. Joseph who is a breeder, handler was coming up to GR for the show and brought along a 5 month old black female standard that he was keeping to show, but instead decided on her sister. Bob and I talked about every scenario… not getting the puppy, getting the puppy, not deciding yet… etc. but when he saw her it was puppy love at first sight. Since I was going up north to a weekend crop, we decided to bring her home on Sunday. This gave Bob time to shop for new beds, collar, leash and toys. I think he hit every pet store in town.
This is how she looked when we first saw her and after she had a bit of a haircut.
Her registered name will be “Bob’s Marlee Red Red Wine“.. appropriate since Bob is the one who made the arrangements and picked her out. She will really be his dog and Ginger is mine.
The first day home with her had me worried some.. she wouldn’t walk or follow us and Bob had to carry her. When he put her down on the floor in the kitchen, she just stood there, trembling. This was all so new since she had been brought up in a kennel and had no home experience. He put her in the crate (the condo) and she relaxed and laid down and watched all the activity. Ginger made her feel a little more welcome…. she just wanted to play with this new furry companion. I knew that was a whole new experience for Marlee and she just needed some adjusting, but even so I was concerned.
By Monday afternoon she was taking the 3 stairs to the garage to go ‘out’, was following Bob around, knew where her food dish was and was romping with Ginger in the yard. Now a week later…. she comes when her name is called, is learning to ‘sit’, knows what ‘outside’ mean and willingly goes out.. she has had a few accidents in the house, but that’s probably our fault for not watching more carefully. She has emptied the toy basket more than once and knows that she’s not supposed to grab and pull the afghans in the living room and the romping is more like bouncing… Tigger style.
Now that she is more comfortable around here, we can start on the real obedience… sit, stay, off, down… etc and few fun things thrown in like shake or ‘High 5′ .
I think we’ll keep her.
