We were driving last night and passed a home that had a sign out front advertising African Violets and Orchids for sale. Unfortunately they were closed at that time, otherwise the car would have veered to the left and up the driveway. The reason I even blog about this is that my grandmother grew African Violets and just driving by this sign took me back about 40 years.  She had a large window ledge where the telephone rested and that window had no less than a dozen plants in various hues of pink and purple. They were gorgeous. I remember her telling me, perhaps in preparation of my one day growing them, that you had to water them from the soil and not to let the leaves get wet. Not only are these flowers petite and wonderfully soft, the leaves feel like a plush velvet. Even though they’ve not been a favorite flower of mine, I have been enamored by them simply because my grandmother loved them so much.  I did try growing a couple a few years back and they lasted a little while, but eventually withered up and died.  Whether it was from over watering or under watering, or the wrong amount of sun, I’ll never know, but I’m willing to give it another try. I’ll be going back to that house and picking out some african violets and possibly orchids and will think of my grandmother every day when I look at them.

I’d totally love to see Alaska with or without Tim being there but having him and all his creativity makes it super-d-dooper!
