I had forgotten what it was like. Alex was easy, he was independent. “Teenage sitting” for my niece last week was certainly an experience. It was getting up early to drive her to school at 7:30am, but even before leaving the house, it was making breakfast… something that can be eaten in the car on the way to school, it was fixing lunch… something not boring, yet nutritious. Then getting to school on time and waiting in line with all the other cars trying to get to the school. Now she’s a great person.. good student, good with sports, no reason not to be trusted, but on the last day she really irked me. She texted me that she was staying after to talk with a teacher and was getting a ride…. ding ding ding… bells going off… obviously ‘someone’, a friend, was giving her the ride. After several attempted texts back and phone calls to her cell with no responses I was beginning to get worried and a little… no, a lot pissed off. She strolls in 3 hours later and I laid into her good… Now had she called to tell me that on this gorgeous sunny day that she wanted to hang with friends after school and she would be home in time for volleyball practice, it would NOT be a problem, but to lie and not respond to messages was immature and dishonest. I felt responsible for her in her parent’s absence and really taken advantage of. I hope I made it clear enough. The sad thing is that her parent’s didn’t seemed to be upset about it when they found out. The good thing is I found a really great scrapbook store in their town and a very nice yarn store in the neighboring one. Return visits to both the next time I’m in the area.
